Duntroon to Oamaru 54km
This is our last day on the trail. After an early breakfast we set out in cool and overcast conditions but at least it was dry. The trail today passed through many farms and we rode through many wetland areas where recent and extensive plantings have taken place. This seems to be a collaboration between sponsors, interested parties, service clubs, and of course the farmers. It just goes to show that when communities come together with a common goal then great things can happen.
We played leapfrog with our Australian friends today. We came together at a local viewing point called Elephant rocks but there was debate about which boulders actually resembled elephants but at least they were all gray!
On we went on this brilliant trail and then we came to one final obstacle, an old rail tunnel it has a kink in the middle to the first part was pitch black, our limited torches got us through but we were all relieved to pass the kink and see light at the end to guide us through.
A little bit of up and down followed but nothing too serious, we must be getting fitter as the km’s just seemed to fly by.
Before we knew it we arrived in Enfield for an early lunch at the Port Enfield tavern. This pub is in the middle of nowhere but has gained a new lease of life with the advent of the cycle trail. The proprietors have grabbed this opportunity with both hands with friendly service and hospitality and excellent food.
From here it was mostly a gentle downhill and soon we came to the outskirts of
The route took us through the very pretty and well kept botanical gardens and then we popped out into the main st.
Our Aussie mates turned up shortly after so more photos and congratulations all round.
I then reunited with my truck and we loaded up the bikes before heading to the local brewery for a well deserved celebratory drink.
It was now time to check into our accommodation and we were afforded a free room upgrade and it is flash!
A quick shower and we headed to the world famous Steam Punk museum. An eclectic mix of weird and wonderful creations. Some people in this world are blessed with amazing imaginations and some of them can turn their imaginings into works of art that we can all share. Fantastic and recommended.
By now the southerly was really kicking in so after a half hearted wander through the precinct we retreated to our flash rooms for a bit of a rest.
I have to say this has been an amazing journey, the organisation has been first class. Our accommodation and the food have exceeded expectations and we have seen our own country at its very best.
As usual team Palmy have gotten along famously and positive people with a sense of humour and fun makes for a seriously good time.
