Christchurch to Twizel

Everyone slept very well last night after our big day of travel yesterday. We found a most excellent cafe just a couple of hundred metres away from our motel and we enjoyed a leisurely breakfast on the upstairs balcony.

Then it was a short trip to the airport to collect Craig from Palmy and then we set off for Twizel. It was an easy drive and the conditions were warm and sunny.

We stopped for an obligatory pie at the Fairlie bakehouse, my paua pie was a beaut.

Then it was a short hop over Burkes pass and into the best views in NZ.

The weather gods were smiling today and how could anyone tire of looking at the southern alps over lake Tekapo.

We stopped at a lookout with Mt Cook looking as gorgeous as ever. Craig was especially happy as he has never visited this area before.

A few more kms and we made it to Twizel and checked in with A2O, the company that is organising the logistics of our trip. After our induction we checked into our motel and then went for an introductory bike ride along a trail that circles Twizel. Nothing too strenuous but it was good to get a bit of exercise after so much time in the car.

Back for a shower and then to a bar/ restaurant aptly named Ministry of Works for drinks and dinner.

A cracking day and if the weather holds we are in for a spectacular treat tomorrow. 🤞
